Swihart helps Red Sox past Mets in 10

- By Charles O’Brien

NEW YORK >> Blake Swihart hit an inside-the-park home run in the 10th inning and the Boston Red Sox stopped the New York Mets’ seven-game winning streak, holding on for a 6-4 victory Friday night.

The Red Sox, visiting the Mets for the first time since 2001, scored three times in the 10th. Swihart led off with a drive that appeared to clear the center field wall and bounce back into play, but the ball was ruled in play.

The NL East-leading Mets rallied in the bottom half when reliever Junichi Tazawa walked four straight batters with two outs to force home a run. Craig Breslow replaced Tazawa and retired Yoenis Cespedes on a fly ball for his first save.

Tommy Layne (1-1) got the win. Carlos Torre (5-6) took the loss.

Mets ace Matt Harvey pitched six shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out eight.

Before the game, Boston announced that pitcher Clay Buchholz is done for the season because of a strained flexor muscle in his right elbow, and his health is the key to whether the Red Sox pick up the option on his 2016 contract.

The 31-year-old Buchholz hasn’t pitched since the All Star break. He’s on the 60day disabled list and has been cleared to resume throwing next week, but new Red Sox President Dave Dombrowski said Friday that won’t leave Buchholz enough time to pitch in the majors.
