Roberta August’s legacy in Torringto

-

It is with great sadness that we read of the passing of Roberta August. Upon reading her obituary, I realized that condolences should be shared with the entire community as Roberta’s legacy is her commitment to community service as reflected by the number of organizations she dedicated herself to.

Those of us who are affiliated with Prime Time House are reminded daily of her work here as we pass by the sign on building No. 822 on our campus, the Roberta Lee August Building.

Roberta served on Prime Time House’s Board of Directors for many years. As president of the board, she fully immersed herself in the work of the agency and supported the executive director in fighting for dignified housing and treatment of people with mental illness throughout the service system.

When she announced she was stepping down from board service, a magnificent party was thrown in her honor, where Prime Time staff and members, personal friends and fellow Rotarians gathered to roast her. Her parting gift was naming the building after her.

Roberta had a great sense of humor and always had a smile to share. We will miss the piping hot homemade berry pies that she made and delivered to us for our members every Thanksgiving Day.

Because of her passion for those suffering with mental illness, as well as her keen financial savvy, she acted as a conservator for some of our members after she retired. A tireless philanthropist, who gave so much of her time and her heart, Roberta will be missed by the thousands whose lives are richer because of her heartfelt and passionate gifts of time, talent and treasure. — Lisa Lynch, executive director, Prime Time House, Torrington
