Who’s the guy standing with Joe Summa?

- Owen Canfield

Robert J. Summa emailed me a photo of Sergio Garcia Tuesday, but it was the other guy in the photo he knew would grab my interest. I mean, pictures of Sergio are all over the place, especially during the golf season.

Not so, Joe Summa, who stood there smiling beside Garcia at Stanwich Country Club in Greenwich last Thursday. Joe is the grandson of Robert J., who is a transplanted Torringtonian who lives in Collinsville with wife Maryanne, Joe’s grandmother.

Joe Summa, his Grandpa explained, is 22, a senior at Michigan State who is currently completing an internship with Sports Illustrated. Sergio had come up to play Stanwich, one of the state’s best and most challenging courses.

With apologies to Sondheim, I have labeled the picture “Sergio: Side-bySide-by-Summa.’’

Joe is Mike Summa’s son. Mike has been head pro at The Stanwich Club since Nov. 1, 2000. He served previously in the same position at the Apawamis club near Rye, N.Y. Mike’s story is a good one; maybe you read it in this space some years ago. I’ll reprise it at a later date.

Bob and Maryanne produced two sons, Bob Jr. and Mike, both men of considerable accomplishment, like their parents.

Because of the photo, received from the man I have considered my best friend since about 1948, I’m going to pick Garcia to win the PGA. And I’m picking Joe Summa to become SI’s next Steve Rushin.

••• Torrington Country Club keeps its members and social members informed about goings-on at the club with almost daily emails. Recently, a sad one arrived, and on its heels a bright and happy announcement.

The first noted the death of 31-year-old Matthew Antoniazzi, whose parents, Dave and Mary Ann Antoniazzi, are longtime members at TCC. Contributions in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Drakeville Volunteer Fire Department.

The second announced that Aug. 6 from 7 to 11 p.m., “Doo Wop Night’’ will be held at the club. Music and food from the 1950s will be featured all night long . . . well at least until 11 p.m. ••• I love the golf courses of the area. They are New England through and through and my own affinity for the game and the grounds it is played on, stems from my caddying days at Green Woods, just over the line in Winsted. A good number of my friends during that early time caddied at Torrington CC, so I knew all about that club, too.

Sweeping changes have taken place at both tracks over the decades but back then, Stan Staszowski was head pro at Green Woods and his older brother Frank, at TCC.

Canaan became a popular place for Torrington and Winsted golfers much later when the late Earl Julian, a former mayor of Winsted, purchased it and his brother Paul became teaching pro and ran the pro shop. Paulie and I go way back to caddying days at Green Woods in the late 40s and early 50s. I was never a good player and never had the desire or the time to learn but Paulie, who had natural skills, learned the golf teaching game from Stan and the two became and remain, great friends.
