See ‘As You Like It’ at the Gunn
Shakespeare Society provides an afternoon performance
WASHINGTON >> A special event with scenes from Shakespeare’s effervescent comedy, As You Like It, performed by The Shakespeare Society and The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival will take place on Sunday, August 14, 3 p.m. at the Gunn Memorial Library in Washington.
The event includes an afternoon of performance and conversation with the Artistic Directors of The Shakespeare Society and the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Michael Sexton and Davis McCallum, along with cast members of HVSF’s boisterous and creative production of the play, currently running at the stunning Boscobel House and Gardens, overlooking the Hudson River. As You Like It is one of Shakespeare’s most delightful, life- and loveaffirming comedies. Come to the Forest of Arden with Rosalind, Orlando, and the other “country copulatives,” who will perform scenes from the play. A reception will follow.
The Shakespeare Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the enjoyment, understanding, and appreciation of William Shakespeare’s works through performance, commentary, and educational activities. “Our humanist mission — artistic, literary, and educational — is to bring to everyone the joy and transformative power of the works of William Shakespeare. Members receive at least five free events of commentary and performance each season in NYC, and we offer memberships at deep discounts to teachers, students and artists. We also provide extensive education programs to the children of NYC in all five boroughs,” the organization’s website states.

Join them every summer for a twelve-week season of plays presented in repertory, with the natural beauty of the Hudson Highlands as the backdrop. Their exuberant productions garner consistent critical acclaim from regional and national media (The New York Times, New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal). HVSF also takes the magic of Shakespeare and live theater beyond their tent by touring shows throughout the Hudson Valley and by presenting limited runs of classic plays in local landmark venues. Their acclaimed arts education programs include training for earlycareer theater artists, professional development for educators, and programs and performances that serve more than 40,000 middle and high school students each year.
