MCW United set for varsity stage

Players from Wamogo, Wolcott Tech and Housatonic join forces

Wolcott Tech/Housatonic/ Wamogo, henceforth known as MCW United for the merging of their mascots – Mountaineers, (Wild)Cats and Warriors — is the resurrection of Wolcott Tech and Housatonic varsity programs that dropped to JV because of falling numbers.

Together with Wamogo, team numbers climb to 40 kids — 26 from Wolcott Tech, 14 from Housatonic and 2 from Wamogo.

Houstonic, the oldest program, dropped to JV three years ago; Wolcott Tech went down last year.

“Our seniors played varsity as freshmen,” said United defensive coordinator Doug Richardson, the Mountaineer head coach last year.

Wolcott Tech senior defensive end/offensive tackle Dalton Moreau is the only Wildcat with varsity experience.

The bottom line is a lot of inexperience balanced by big offensive and defensive lines averaging 250 pounds in the interior of the D line.

Each component is grateful for the merger.

“Without this, there would be no football,” said Richardson.

“We’re all buying into the co-op,” said Head Coach Jamie Coty. “Every position is open. There are no guarantees from last year.”
