Enjoy a Barbershop Harmony Show Nov. 12
WATERBURY >> The Valley Chordsmen are preparing for the 69th annual Barbershop Harmony Show, directed by Reuben Barnes of Naugatuck.
The performance will be Saturday Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Rotella Magnet School, 440 Pierpont Ave., Waterbury.
The show, titled “Radio Daze” has the chorus recreating the performance of an “old time radio hour” taking place during a freak snowstorm with the group performing popular music of the time and comically filling in for storm canceled guest acts, commercial jingles and background music.
Along with their own performance, the chorus has renowned ensembles to join them.
‘GQ Girls Quartet’ is an a cappella and barbershop quartet from Baltimore, MD. They sing a variety of styles spanning several decades and are four great friends who have a passion for creating a unique sound. They formed as an a cappella project in the Summer of 2011 at Towson University. Since then, GQ has competed in various a cappella competitions such as the Harmony Sweepstakes and SingStrong, as well as the Rising Star Contest and International Quartet Contest for Sweet Adelines International. They are the 2013 SingStrong and Rising Star Champions, the 2013 2nd Place Harmony Sweepstakes Champions, and 2014 11th Place International Quartet Finalists. In 2016, they received the highest regional score of all time at the Sweet Adelines International Region 19 Quartet Contest.
The Yale Alley Cats, a fourteen-person all-male a cappella group, have been spreading music around the world since 1943. They find their roots in jazz, but their repertoire has expanded to include Motown, pop, classical, and many other genres. They are one of the nations most renowned a-cappella ensembles whose diverse repertoire of songs and acknowledged musical excellence has allowed them to perform at a multitude of venues including jazz clubs, embassies, the set of NBC’s The West Wing, the main stage at the Dresden Music Festival, the beaches of Hawai’i, the Martha Stewart Living television program, Parisian squares, and the shores of Turkey.
