TORRINGTON >> Humans will be running for their lives on Saturday, Nov. 5 — zombies are set to take over beautiful White Memorial in Litchfield, during the Northwest CT YMCA’s Zombie Chase Challenge.

“We are excited to extend the Halloween season for all families in the community by offering the Zombie Chase Challenge,” said Mathew Montgomery, Northwest CT YMCA’s Senior Health and Wellness director. “This event truly is special as it promotes all families engaging in a fun — yet frightening — healthy lifestyle. This event, and our entire Grand Prix Race Series, encompasses our healthy living agenda for the communities.”

There are several ways to join the fun. One has the choice to register as a “Human,” “Zombie” or “Jumper.” Humans must quickly get through the zombie and jumper infested 5K course to the finish line with as many of your lives (flags) as possible. Zombies will not physically touch the runners other than to attempt to grab one of the three flags from their belt.

Zombies are released from the starting line 2 minutes after the humans. Their goal is to collect as many human lives as possible while getting to the finish line. Jumpers will be scattered throughout the course to scare and capture human flags. Jumpers will not be running the course, but simply have a task of collecting as many human lives as possible.

Children age 12 and under have the option to partake in a 1-mile Zombie Chase Challenge or to participate in the full challenge as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Both kids’ options are only $10.

The cost for adults, in all categories, is $25 prior to the event and $30 for dayof registration. Participants registered by Oct. 26 will receive a free race T-shirt. Registration can be made online at nwctYsports.org, or at any of the Northwest CT YMCA’s three branches (Torrington, Winsted, Canaan).

A makeup artist will be available to paint faces and transform an individual into a member of the living dead. All participants are encouraged to dress up.

The Zombie Chase Challenge is the final event in the Y’s 2016 Grand Prix Race Series. All money raised from the Series aid the Y’s charitable services, helping to make sure it can offer its services to all, and continue to be instrumental in building strong communities through programs and initiatives that focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.

“It continues to be our goal that every individual who comes to us, regardless of age, income or background has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive here at the Y,” said Greg Brisco, Northwest CT YMCA CEO. “Each year the needs of our community grow, and with limited resources we look for creative ways, like the Zombie Chase Challenge, to meet those needs.”
