Virginia tops North Carolina

CHARLOTTES­VILLE, VA. >>Kyle Guy scored 17 points, London Perrantes had 13 and No. 23 Virginia used a small lineup to neutralize No. 5 North Carolina’s size in a 53-43 victory Monday night.

Guy connected on five 3-pointers for Virginia (209, 10-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) and Perrantes hit three, continuing to emerge from a shooting slump that contribute­d greatly to a four-game skid for the Cavaliers.

Joel Berry II scored 12 points to lead the Tar Heels (25-6, 13-4), who snapped a four-game winning streak. ACC player of the year contender Justin Jackson, who arrived averaging 19.9 points in league play, was guarded most of the night by Perrantes and scored just seven points and missed seven of his 10 shots. NO. 11 BAYLOR 71, NO. 10 WEST VIRGINIA 62 >> Johnathan Motley scored 19 of his 23 points after halftime and Baylor won its home finale over West Virginia.

The Bears (24-6, 11-6 Big 12) avenged a 21-point loss at West Virginia on Jan. 10, which came after Baylor had won its first 15 games and reached No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time in school history.

Jo Lual-Acuil added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Baylor, which ended the game with a 30-13 run over the final 9 minutes. Al Freeman had 12 with a pair of 3-pointers in the closing stretch.

Jevon Carter had points and nine rebounds for West Virginia (23-7, 116).

The Mountainee­rs led 49-41 when Carter made a jumper with 9:04 left, and didn’t score again until Carter’s nifty basket 3 minutes later when he drove, stopped, twisted and then scored with a short jumper. That put them ahead for the last time. NO. 12 TEXAS 69, NO. 24 KANSAS STAT 61 >> Joyner Holmes scored 17 points, Lashann Higgs added 16 and Texas beat Kansas State to secure No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

Kelsey Lang hit a baseline jumper with 1:57 to go for a 61-54 lead and she fouled out 13 seconds later. Then Audrey-Ann CaronGoudr­eau picked up her fifth foul with 1:22 left, but Kansas State missed both free throws and trailed 6455.

Higgs made four straight free throws with under two minutes left, the last for a 10-point lead at the 1:06 mark.

Brianna Taylor added 12 points with 11 rebounds for Texas (22-7, 15-3), which broke a three-game losing streak. The Longhorns won their 15th conference game to tie the 2002-03 and 201516 teams for the program record.

Karyla Middlebroo­k scored 14 and Breanna Lewis had 12 points and nine rebounds for Kansas State (21-9, 11-7), which lost for the first time in four games.

Kansas State didn’t score for the first five minutes of the game and trailed 9-5 after the first quarter. Texas built a 27-19 halftime lead with 11 points from Joyner Holmes. NO. 25 TEMPLE 66, CENTRAL FLORIDA 60 >> Alliya Butts hit four 3-pointers to become Temple’s single-season leader for 3s, Feyonda Fitzgerald set a conference assist record, and the Owls beat Central Florida.

Butts passed Shey Peddy for the honor and Fitzgerald put her name in the American Athletic Conference record book with her 205th assist.
