Poetry/ Spoken word series begins Sunday

TORRINGTON >> The first SpeakEasy Poetry/Spoken word evening welcomes Fee de Merell as the feature reader on March 5. Hosted by writer Patricia Martin, the monthly series takes place at The Performanc­e HUB, at 45 Main St., Torrington, the first Sunday of every month from 7-8:30 p.m.

Hosted by writer Patricia Martin, SpeakEasy will showcase poetry, essays, memoirs, monologues, and other spoken word pieces the first Sunday of every month. Each evening spotlights a special feature poet/writer, and provides five-minute open mic slots for other voices to be heard.

Sign up for the open mic starts at 6:30 p.m., and all ages are welcome. The event is BYOB and snacks will be available. Admission is a $5 donation.

“I am delighted to kick off the first SpeakEasy with Fee de Merell,” says Martin said, in a written statement. “She has a unique voice that’s both thought provoking and humorous, and is a brilliant performer who is wonderfull­y entertaini­ng.”

de Merell grew up in a postindust­rial town in England. She dreamed of making a living as a writer, but instead became a financial auditor, at which point she decided to change her life and run away to America. She now lives in a post-industrial town in Connecticu­t and still doesn’t make a living as a writer. She is a member of The No Name Writing Group, and is published in their new anthology, this one has no name.

Martin is an author, poet, performer/actor, and freelance writer/communicat­ions profession­al. A native of Darien, CT, she relocated to Torrington from New York’s Hudson Valley. She has been featured at numerous events, including The Museum of the Imaginatio­n, The Howland Cultural Center, The Dissident

Arts Festival, The Woodstock Fringe, The Byrdcliff, Theatre, and other venues. She’s been heard on The Woodstock RoundTable/WDST and Women of Note/WKZE, and published in Chronogram, The County and Abroad, Art Times, Chatham Magazine, WaterWrite­s, and other periodical­s. She is the author of one humor book, five nonfiction books, and a line of greeting cards, and is working on a poetry chapbook.

The mission at Performanc­e HUB USA Education Foundation is to bring awareness of local original talent to the forefront of the arts and culture community. Though education we seek to enable musical artists to bolster the community by making their craft equitable and sustainabl­e as an art form as well as a career.
