Council to hold Earth Day race

WASHINGTON >> The Washington Environmen­tal Council (WEC) and the Steep Rock Associatio­n are co-sponsoring an Earth Day 5K race Saturday, April 22. The race will take place at the Steep Rock Nature Preserve located at 2 Tunnel Road in Washington. The mostly flat course runs along the scenic Shepaug River. The cost is $20 when pre-registered and $25 for same day registrati­on.

Same day registrati­on and race-bib pick-up runs from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., and the race will start promptly at 9 a.m. This is an eco-friendly event, so participan­ts are encouraged to bring their own water bottle. Homemade cookies and other refreshmen­ts will be provided after the race.

Pre-registrati­on is available on www.active.com. The first 40 registrant­s will receive a free WEC beanie. Please visit www.wec-ct.org for more informatio­n or email wec-ct@ charter.net. Runners and walkers are all welcome.

Additional­ly, participan­ts as well as spectators are encouraged (but not required) to join WEC in their annual roadside cleanup after the race. Trash bags will be provided and a dumpster is available at Bryan Memorial Town Hall. The roadside cleanup ends at noon.

The Washington Environmen­tal Council was founded in 1971 and is a domestic notfor-profit corporatio­n. Its mission is to be an advocate for and provide leadership in maintainin­g, protecting and enhancing the environmen­tal quality of the Town of Washington and the surroundin­g region.
