Driver pleads not guilty in manslaughter case
TORRINGTON >> A Litchfield woman charged with vehicular manslaughter has pleaded not guilty to all charges in connection with the case, according to state judicial records.
Elizabeth Waterbury, 57, of Goshen Road, Litchfield, was arrested and charged in connection with an October crash that killed a Harwinton woman and injured five others. She is next scheduled to appear in court on May 11.
She has been charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, four counts of second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, third-degree assault, interfering with an officer/resisting arrest, tampering with physical evidence, illegally operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs and failure to drive in proper lane.
Her bond has been set at $800,000, according to state records, and she has not been released from custody.
Waterbury, who was driving a Ford Escape, swerved into the southbound lane while traveling north on North Street at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 23, 2016, according to an affidavit seeking a warrant for her arrest, striking several riders in a group of 18 motorcycles traveling in the other direction.
Waterbury told police that a motorcycle had entered her lane, causing her to swerve into the southbound lane, according to the affidavit.
Five civil suits have also been filed against Waterbury in connection with the October incident, including one by Edmond Kern, acting as the administrator of the estate of Aislinn M. Kern, who was killed in the accident.
