‘Winners of the 2016 Juried Show’ opens April 8

-

WASHINGTON >> The Washington Art Association & Gallery will present “Winners of the 2016 Juried Show,” April 8-29.

An opening reception will be held on April 8, from 4-6 p.m. in the WAA galleries. The reception is free and open to the public.

The show showcases the works selected by internationally acclaimed artist Eric Aho. After reviewing nearly 500 works and selecting 60 for a juried exhibition in 2016, Aho then choose three exceptional artists for a group exhibition this year. “Winners of the 2016 Juried Show” features the work of David Moriarty, Hans Neleman and Judith Wyer.

Hans Neleman’s assemblages explore taboos, erotic symbolism, morbid beauty and the harmony of opposites between mortal and vital, revered and profane, myth and modern tale. Found objects are reappropriated and combined with layers of collaged and painted imagery, to create ‘portraits’ or ‘abstractions’ that aim to transfigure elements of darkness into an aesthetic realm.

David Moriarty paints in a modernist style mixing figuration with abstraction. He combines contradictions and juxtapositions leaving the door open to chance and spontaneous decision making in the creative process. Part of his work represented in the exhibit is from a series called Los Gilligan’s, a comedic title derived from the television sitcom. The paintings in the series are derived from a series of genre paintings by different artists, mashed up or collaged together.

For Judith Wyer, the image is fundamental. It could be something seen on the street, in a museum or an accidental arrangement of objects in her studio. The ephemeral images or glimpses that catch her eye are painted into pictures that bring value and beauty to our common experiences.
