Milius does it all for Thomaston

THOMASTON >> Thomaston’s softball team stayed undefeated (3-0) in a 4-3 win over Lewis Mills (11) Tuesday afternoon that played as much on confidence as it did on talent.

Thomaston’s Alexa Milius accounted for all four Golden Bear runs with two home runs (3 RBI) and, indirectly, a wild pitch scoring the winner on an intentional walk to her.

Lewis Mills’ Jordan Perzan homered and came just short of the tying run on one of five Thomaston errors.

In the background, Lewis Mills sophomore pitcher Mary-Kate Cormier, feasted on a Thomaston lineup sprinkled with freshmen and sophomores, toting up

15 strikeouts and just three hits for the Golden Bears.

Thomaston junior Kate Everett, taking over for graduated All-Star Morgan Sanson, did almost as well: 10 strikeouts, 5 hits.

In her first time up, Perzan, a senior, proved she can go long every time she connects. A blast to the outfield dropped for an error. After a hit by Spartan sophomore Coral Gorack, Everett ended the threat with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the inning, Milius, a junior, homered in the midst of three strikeouts from Cormier.

Perzan found the mark in the third inning, blasting the 1-1 tie deep into left field.

Following a walk to Everett, Milius answered with her second homer in the bottom of the inning, 3-1.

Perzan led off with a walk in the fifth. Catcher Milius made a brilliant stab on a pop bunt; Cormier hit into a fielder’s choice, then scored on an infield error and an RBI single by Aimee Carrier (2-for-3).

At 3-2, confidence ruled for Everett with a called third strike for the final out with Spartans on second and third, then took center stage with Milius in the bottom of the inning.

Sam Leone led off with a walk, reached second on an error and third on a sacrifice bunt. Milius came to the plate. “We could have just sent her to first on an intentional walk, but I wanted our pitcher to build confidence by pitching around her,” said Mills Coach Dave Bohmer.

The fourth pitch went wild. Leone raced home with the winning run.

And still, at 4-2, it wasn’t certain.

Chloe Brzoska drew a one-out walk in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Perzan ripped another shot to left. It fell for an error, scoring Brzoska. Perzan steamed around third. The relay caught her at the plate.

“Katie pitched great; she showed real maturity today,” said Coach Kelly Finlay. “As a young team, we have a lot of room to grow.”
