TORRINGTON >> Narcan was recently administered to a New Milford man after he was found under the influence of heroin and breathing with difficulty, police said.

William J. Baird III, 19, of 1 Country Farm Lane, New Milford, was arrested April 8 and charged with use of drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of a narcotic and possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana.

Two Torrington officers were dispatched to East Main Street on April 8 to respond to a report of an unconscious man in the driver’s side of a parked vehicle, according to a probable cause report.

When police arrived at the car, the engine was cold, the keys were in the ignition and a man was slumped over in the driver’s seat, police said.

“Baird was drooling heavily and taking shallow, labored breaths,” police said in the report.

Officers were unable to wake Baird from outside the vehicle, so they opened the door and succeeded in rousing him, according to the report.

“Baird had pinpoint pupils, slurred sluggish speech and appeared disoriented,” police said. “Baird admitted to having inhaled several bags of heroin after parking his vehicle.”

One full bag of heroin and “several” empty bags were found in the car, according to the report, as well as a plastic bag of marijuana and a glass pipe. Campion ambulance responded and treated Baird by administering Narcan to reverse the effects of the heroin, police said.

Baird was then taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and admitted, according to report. He was left in the care of the hospital staff and released from police custody on a promise to appear in court on April 17.

Baird is next scheduled to appear in court on May 16, according to state records.
