Registrati­on now open for city Memorial Day parade

TORRINGTON >> The Torrington Veterans Support Committee is actively planning this year’s Memorial Day Parade and ceremony. The parade will be conducted, rain or shine, on Monday, May 29, stepping off at 9:30 a.m. This year’s theme is Duty, Honor, Country.

The committee reminds all area organizati­ons, teams, troops, packs, businesses, and individual­s interested in participat­ion in the parade and/or ceremony they must agree to follow the general regulation­s listed below, and register with the Parade Marshal prior to May 21.

1. The United States Flag will be the only national colors to be carried in the parade. Post Department and Organizati­onal colors are permissibl­e.

2. The throwing of candy or other items, by any parade participan­t is strictly prohibited, unless the participat­ing unit is marching.

3. Banners of a political nature are barred from the parade.

4. Floats will be focused on Memorial Day consistent with this year’s Parade Theme.

5. The distance between units will be 50 feet, and this distance must be maintained by all units throughout the parade.

6. Every unit participat­ing in the parade must appoint a Unit Leader.

7. All Unit Leaders must report to the Division Marshal before the start of the parade.

8. Unit Leaders will be responsibl­e to ensure the regulation­s are adhered to by every participan­t in their Unit throughout the parade.

9. Trophies will be awarded in Coe Park after the Parade, and before the start of the Memorial Day ceremony. Be sure at least one representa­tive of your group is present for the start of the ceremony.

Any veteran who wants to participat­e in the parade, but feels that they cannot walk the route, are welcomed, and encouraged, to ride with other veterans on an open trailer. While there is plenty of room on the trailer, notify the Parade Marshal at 860-605-8826, so the committee may gather the appropriat­e amount of chairs for the ride. To particpate, all must receive a verificati­on number from the Parade Marshal.
