TORRINGTON >> Torrington Veterans Support Committee announces the 9th Annual Memorial Day Essay Competitio­n. This year’s theme is: “What do we owe to those who have served, and why?”

The competitio­n is open to all students in grades 9-12 who reside in Torrington. Student may be attending any school or academy including, but not limited to, THS, OWTS, Torrington Christian Academy, or home schooled. The essay must be between 400 and 500 words and will be judged for content, grammar, punctuatio­n and neatness. The deadline is 3 p.m. on Friday, May 5. Essays may be dropped off, in an envelope marked Memorial Day Essay Competitio­n at the Veterans Service Office, in the former Fuessenich Park Field House (behind Torrington Amory & Doyle’s

Medical Supply) Call 860 489-2531 for days and times of operation. Essays may also be mailed to the Torrington Veterans Support Committee, Attn: Essay Competitio­n 2017, 140 Main St., Torrington, CT 06790

All essays must include the student’s name, address, phone number, email address, grade and school. The winner may be asked to appear on a Cable 5 Veteran View program and participat­e in the Memorial Day parade. Winners must agree to be recognized in local newspapers, radio and television and at the ceremony after the parade.

First prize is $100; second prize, $75, third prize, $50, and an honorable mention will receive a handmade pen.
