City man charged with murder

Police: Wife had significant head trauma when found

-

TORRINGTON >> A city man is charged with murder in the death of his wife earlier this month.

Torrington detectives arrested 70-year-old Daniel Gervais Wednesday and also charged him with tampering with evidence.

Officers responded to 63 Cider Mill Crossing on April 22 after receiving a 911 call from Daniel Gervais reporting that his wife, Phyllis, had fallen and was dead. When officers arrived, they found the 79-year-old woman on the floor with significant trauma injuries to the head, police said.

Torrington police detectives were called to the scene and took over the investigation. Detectives conducted interviews with neighbors, family and Daniel Gervais. The incident was considered a suspicious death initially because evidence at the scene was not consistent with a person falling, police said.

The Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime Unit was called in to assist in processing the scene. Detectives were at 63 Cider Mill Crossing for two days processing the scene and seizing evidence from the home.

On April 27, the Chief State Medical Examiner reported Phyllis Gervais’ cause of death was from blunt force trauma and ruled her death a homicide.

Daniel Gervais is being held in lieu of a $1 million court-set bail.

Gervais will be arraigned in Bantam court Thursday.

The investigation is active and open.
