‘Becoming: 30 Hotchkiss Artists’ exhibit at Tremaine Gallery

LAKEVILLE >> The Tremaine Art Gallery at The Hotchkiss School, 11 Interlaken Rd, Lakeville, is pleased to present the group exhibit Becoming: 30 Hotchkiss Artists, May 6 - June 18. The 2016/17 academic year has been a celebratory one at Hotchkiss, as it marks the 125th anniversary of the School’s first commencement. This exhibit honors the anniversary as well as Hotchkiss’s visual arts tradition. Becoming will bring together work by alumni from the School’s early decades to the present and include work in all mediums. A reception will be held Saturday, May 20, 4 to 6 p.m.

The Hotchkiss School’s first art classes began in the fall of 1929 when newly-hired Robert Osborn started teaching in Harris House basement. Osborn created a curriculum that combined technique with observation of the natural world with rigorous engagement with the work of other artists. He regularly displayed loan exhibits from regional museums, a tradition carried on by his successor, Thomas P. Blagden ‘29. Today, five faculty members teach in the the School’s Art Program, along with three more in the Photography, Film, and Related Media Program.

The Tremaine Gallery is a museum-caliber gallery located in the main building of The Hotchkiss School. With education at the heart of its mission, the gallery hosts six exhibitions a year.
