Group to explore works by E.M. Forster
WASHINGTON >> Literary enthusiasts Kathy Kehoe and Karen Silk will lead two book discussions, “Connecting with E.M. Forster,” on Forster’s two best-known novels.
“Howard’s End” (1910) is the discussion topic on on Tuesday, May 23, at 4:30 p.m., and “A Passage to India” (1924) on Tuesday June 13, at 4:30 p.m. The group will meet in the Reading Room of the Gunn Memorial Library.
E. M. Forster is one of the most celebrated British novelists of the 20th century. Howards End and A Passage to India are quite different in theme and setting, but have an important aspect in common. Both novels take place in a strictly divided society and deal with the insularity of separate communities and their inability to reach beyond their own environment and experience.
E. M. Forster strongly believed in the importance of personal relationships and in living a life in which spiritual, physical and emotional aspects are all in harmony by establishing connections with others despite boundaries of gender, class, or petty grievance. To reach harmony, both within the self and within the society, is what the characters of these novels strive for.
This is not a lecture series and participation will be encouraged.
Kehoe is an avid reader and an active member of several book groups in the Litchfield area. A former educator and advertising executive, Kathy is thrilled to share her enthusiasm for E.M. Forster with members of the community. Kathy has led former Gunn Library book discussions on Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Jane Austen’s Persuasion, and Edith Wharton’s The Mother’s Recompense.
Silk is a poet. Her work has appeared in literary magazines and her first collection, “Somewhere A Bird”, was published by Antrim House Press. Karen is also a real estate broker with Sotheby’s. She is devoted to the writings of E.M. Forster.
Copies of the books will be available at the circulation desk three weeks prior to the discussions.
This program is free and open to the public; registration is requested. Call 860-868-7586 for further information or visit www. gunnlibrary.org
