TORRINGTON >> A Massachusetts man was recently arrested after being found with 41 bags of heroin in his pocket, according to city police, while at the Rodeway Inn & Suites on Winsted Road.

Matthew T. Coburn, 35, of 377 Waterfarm Road, Sheffield, Massachusetts, was arrested May 11 and charged with use of drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of narcotics, and possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana, according to police.

An officer “conducted a consensual encounter” with Coburn in the parking lot of the Rodeway Inn at approximately 10 p.m., according to a probable cause report.

“Coburn was displaying signs of criminal activity. I asked Coburn if he had anything illegal in his pockets and he informed me he had heroin in his left pocket,” wrote Officer Tomlin of the city police. “I searched Coburn’s pockets and located 41 bags of heroin.”

A metal marijuana grinder, small bag of marijuana, and straws used to snort heroin were found during a subsequent search of Coburn’s vehicle, according to the report.

The 41 bags, according to the report, were determined to carry 13.57 grams of heroin, according to police, and the bag of marijuana contained 0.46 grams.

Coburn was released on $2,500 non-surety bond and scheduled to appear in Bantam Superior Court on May 22, police said.

Two cases pertaining to a Matthew Coburn born in the same year, scheduled to take place in Waterbury Superior Court, were statutorily-sealed as of Wednesday afternoon.

Cristian Andrade, 43, of Waterbury. was found dead in a room at the Rodeway Inn on April 27, according to city police.

Police were waiting on autopsy results and the toxicology reports from the Chief Medical Examiner’s office in Farmington before a cause of death could be determined, but an outside criminal involvement in his death was not suspected.
