Tickets available for hazardous waste collection day

FALLS VILLAGE >> Tickets are now available for residents to participate in the area’s annual household hazardous waste collection day in Falls Village, set for Saturday, June 3.

The collection day will take place at the Falls Village Highway Garage on Railroad Street from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The garage is located about one mile north of the Housatonic Valley Regional High School just off Route 7.

Each year, hundreds of area residents take advantage of this opportunity to rid their houses of unwanted quantities of household hazardous waste such as paints, stains, turpentine, pesticides, herbicides, household cleaners, and hobby supplies. These materials represent a threat to water quality and public health when not disposed of properly. Propane tanks from barbecue grills are also being accepted at this collection day

at no charge.

Residents are encouraged to look at the containers in their basements, garages and under their kitchen sinks. If some of these containers are no longer needed, and contain warning labels such as toxic, flammable, reactive or corrosive, then residents are encouraged to bring them to the collection day.

Residents are requested to separate “PaintCare eligible” products from other waste brought to the collection day. PaintCare eligible products include paint, stains, primers, sealers, and varnishes. These materials should be placed in one or more separate boxes from any other wastes brought to the collection day.

Residents from participating towns must register and obtain a ticket from their Town Hall in order to participate in the collection day.

Registration is taking place now through June 2.

There is no charge to participants. The event is being sponsored by the Recycling Advisory Committee of the Northwest Hills Council of Governments and the participating towns listed above. More details on the Collection Day can be obtained in a brochure available at Town Halls.
