Vehicle stop results in arrest
TORRINGTON >> A city man was recently arrested on a drug charge after police found crack cocaine in his truck, according to city police.
Tyler K. Barney, 53, of 55 Iowa St. was arrested May 16 and charged with illegal possession of narcotics, use of drug paraphernalia and making an improper turn/stop.
The arrest was made after an officer saw a black pickup truck turn without signaling just before 8 p.m. and stopped the vehicle on Central Avenue.
“The vehicle was occupied by a white male in the driver seat (Tyler Barney...) and a white female. I told Barney the reason for my stop and asked if there was any drugs, weapons, or alcohol in the vehicle. Barney hesitated for a minute then responded with ‘nope,” wrote the officer.
Barney was asked for his license and registration, according to the officer. The woman was unable to provide identification.
“I noticed the female to have a slurred speech and constricted pupils which I know to be signs of impairment from drugs or alcohol. I then asked Barney for consent to search his vehicle and he said ‘go ahead I got nothing,” the report states. “My search of the vehicle resulted in only finding Chore Boy behind the seat which I know to be used for smoking crack cocaine. Inside a cigarette pack found on Barney’s person I found a small plastic bag containing a powder/rock substance that later tested positive for crack cocaine using Nark 2 test #7.” A glass pipe was also found on Barney when he was searched.
Barney was arrested, and the items were seized as evidence, police said.
He was later released on a $500 surety bond and scheduled to appear in Bantam Superior Court.
