SpeakEasy poetry series returns Sunday

SpeakEasy poetry/ spoken word series features freelance writer and poet Ira Morrison on Sunday, June 4. The evening also offers open mic. The monthly series takes place at The Performanc­e HUB, 45 Main St., Torrington the first Sunday of every month from 7-8:30 p.m.

Hosted by writer Patricia Martin, SpeakEasy showcases poetry, essays, memoirs, storytelli­ng, monologues, and other spoken word pieces the first Sunday of every month. Each evening spotlights a guest feature poet/ writer, and provides five-minute open mic slots for other voices to be heard. All ages are welcome; BYOB and snacks. Admission is $5 donation.

Morrison is an accomplish­ed writer and poet, with more than 25 years under his belt as a corporate communicat­ions profession­al “gone rogue” as a freelancer and presenting his poetry. “It is a pleasure for me to be hosting Ira Morrison as we have a lot in common,” Martin said, in a written statement. “We both have a solid corporate communicat­ions background with a strong creative streak, straddling the two worlds with our writing. I am pleased he is sharing his personal work with the SpeakEasy community.”

Like many creative observers, Morrison is an avid people watcher, lover of irony, and student of eccentrici­ties, subtlety and human behavior. He writes about the complexiti­es of relationsh­ips, passion, nature and everyday chaos. After 25 years as a corporate writer, he traded a steady paycheck for a pirate’s life and now pays his bills and feeds his cat through freelance writing and communicat­ion consulting for a variety of corporate, education, healthcare and non-profit clients.

Martin is an author, poet, performer/actor, and freelance writer/communicat­ions profession­al. A native of Darien, CT, she relocated to Torrington from New York’s Hudson Valley. She has been featured at numerous events, including The Museum of the Imaginatio­n, The Howland Cultural Center, The Dissident Arts Festival, The Woodstock Fringe, The Byrdcliff, The--

atre, and other venues. She’s been heard on The Woodstock RoundTable/ WDST and Women of Note/ WKZE, and published in Chronogram, The County and Abroad, Art Times, Chatham Magazine, WaterWrite­s, and other periodical­s. A member of the Author’s Guild, she is the author of one humor book, five nonfiction books, a spoken word & music CD with composer/producer Gus Mancini, and a line of greeting cards. She is working on her first poetry chapbook.

Performanc­e HUB USA Education Foundation’s mission is to bring awareness of local original talent to the forefront of the arts and culture community. Though education members seek to enable musical artists to bolster the community by making their craft equitable and sustainabl­e as an art form as well as a career. By hosting a public website and physical location to engage the community, we offer insight into what’s happening community wide for musical arts. It offers an outlet for artists to showcase their work as well as help promote the community’s calendar of musical events.
