During the ceremony, he was named a Connecticut Art Hero along with eight others in the state.

Atkins is the Choral Director at The Gilbert School in Winsted. Laurel City Singers has been honored to have him as director for 19 years.

The June 4 concert will include “Gabi, Gabi” by William Powell; “A City Called Heaven” by Mahalia Jackson; “Ubi Caritas” and “Notre Pere” by Maurice Duruflé; “Confutatis” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; “Mbiri Kuna Mwari” by Lee Kesselman; “Kyrie” by Jon Leavitt and “Praise His Holy Name” by Keith Hampton.

The choir is a self supporting, not for profit organization, and all members are volunteers who sell tickets to events, to allowing the group to continue to offer musical experiences to anyone who likes to sing. It covers the cost of music for the next concert. The choir averages between 35 and 45 members and generally performs seven or so pieces per concert. Music expenses run between $600 and $800 and no other funding is received. The director and accompanist are volunteers, but members take up a collection among themselves to give them a stipend. The church provides the singers with rehearsal space in exchange for singing at the annual Boar’s Head festival in January.
