Police: Burglary suspect hid under the bed

TORRINGTON » A Bakersvill­e man was recently arrested after he allegedly broke into a Sunny Lane apartment and was found with his feet sticking out from under the bed, according to city police.

Jacob Woodward, 27, of 35 Woodchuck Lane was arrested May 31 and is charged with third-degree criminal mischief, seconddegr­ee burglary, use of drug parapherna­lia, and criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny.

The incident came to the attention of authoritie­s when a Torrington police officer met with an individual in the department lobby on May 31 to discuss a recent burglary complaint, according to a probable cause report.

“Victim #1 stated she came home around 1100 hours (11 a.m.) and heard noise coming from upstairs. Victim # 1 went upstairs and found Jacob Woodward, (a person known to a relative of victim #1) hiding under her bed with his feet sticking out,” wrote the officer. “Woodward claimed he forced his way through the front door by (jimmying) the lock with a credit card and claimed he was just looking to take a nap. Victim # 1 informed me that Woodward was seen yesterday in the back of her apartment by her neighbor (and was ) attempting to find a way into her place as soon as she left but never made entry.”

The victim was unsure whether anything was missing from her residence, according to the report.

Woodward was located just before 6 p.m., according to the report, by two officers in the area of Park Avenue and East Albert Street. He waived his rights, according to the report, and spoke to police.

“Woodward admitted to the above incident as well as the incident reported on May 25, 2017,” the first officer said in the report. “He claimed he had no intention to steal any belongings from Victim # 1.”

According to the report, Woodward was arrested, held in lieu of $25,000 surety bond, and scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Bantam June 12.
