State forest ‘Friends’ plan events

BARKHAMSTE­D » Friends of Peoples State Forest has numerous projects, hikes and talks scheduled and/or in the planning stages for this summer and fall. Volunteers are also needed.

On Friday, June 16, , the Friends will present “Eagles in Connecticu­t” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with DEEP Wildlife Biologist, Brian Hess. Peoples Nature Museum. (*location might have to be moved to the Peoples State Forest Matthies Grove pavilion) RSVP is not required, but appreciate­d at ctfalps@gmail.com or call/text 860-882-9632.

FALPS Tee shirts are available at the Riverton Store. Members say they make a great Father’s Day Gift. A fundraiser is also under way. Over this past winter a 1938 Wood / Canvas canoe has been restored and is being raffled as a fund raiser by FALPS and the Friends of Goodwin Forest (FGF). This canoe was owned by James L. Goodwin who was a leading conservati­onist during the last century. His legacy in part was his donation of the James L. Goodwin State Forest in Hampton and the Great

Pond State Forest in Simsbury. Tickets are selling for $20. and only 500 have been printed. Tickets will be available at many FALPS events. Plan to buy a ticket to support programing for FALPS and FGF. Tickets are also available at the Riverton Store and Collinsvil­le Canoe & Kayak or send a check by mail with self-addressed envelope to: FALPS, P.O. Box 17, Pleasant Valley, CT 06063. The canoe is valued at $4,000 and comes with new paddles.
