TORRINGTON » The Parks and Recreation Department is offering the annual Summer Action and Adventure Program.

This program is open to children 4 years old to children entering 8th Grade in the fall. The Action Program is for children 4 years old to children entering 3rd Grade and will be based at Pleasant View Park on Durand Street.

The Adventure Program is for children entering grades 4-8 in the fall and will be based at Major Besse Park on Riverside Avenue. The program will run for seven weeks, Monday-Friday, -July 3-Aug. 18, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with the option of Before Care and/or After Care for an additional fee. There will be an orientatio­n day for all participan­ts on June 30, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Several affordable packages are available to meet the varying needs of participan­ts and families. Sign up for two week sessions of camp or select a package that covers the whole summer and saves money. Each two-week session includes all activities, visits to the municipal pool, and two field trips to exciting destinatio­ns.

Daily onsite activities will include arts and crafts, sports, group games, onsite visits from local organizati­ons, field days, and so much more. Weekly field trips will feature visits to a Hartford Yard Goats game, Lake Coupounce, Roller Magic, Roaring Brook Nature Center, Burr Pond, Quassy Waterpark, and the movies.

Jazz camp for children to begin in July

LITCHFIELD » Litchfield Jazz Camp, turning out tomorrow’s jazz stars for the past 20 years, proudly announces a program for younger students –Litchfield Jazz Camp Kids. Thanks to a grant from Connecticu­t Community Foundation, campers can register for a day or residentia­l program with needbased scholarshi­p support. Students age 8 to 11, with or without prior experience, may apply.

This one-week musical journey, July 10 -14 at Canterbury School New Milford, is fun and instructiv­e and a top quality experience for children of all learning styles and levels. The Camp takes a relaxed approach to music instructio­n by experience early childhood music educators. Students are taught in small groups and will learn the basics of rhythm and notes, melody, harmony and sight reading. There is a strong focus on singing as well as instrument­s.

A student concert will close the session on July 14. All campers are also invited to perform on the student stage at the Litchfield Jazz Festival on Aug. 5 at Goshen Fairground­s.

The camp day runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Supervised day care is available until 6 p.m. to accommodat­e working parents. Day student fee $400. Boarding student fee is $800. Meals are included. For informatio­n and registrati­on call Litchfield Performing Arts at 860-361-6285.

Summer camp enrollment open

LITCHFIELD » Litchfield Parks and Recreation Summer Fun Camp begins June 26.

Camp is held Monday through Friday at Litchfield’s Community Field, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Early drop-offs and late pick-ups (within reason) are also available for an additional fee. For $28 a day, your children will have fun with their friends, learn new things and have great experience­s. All the need is a lunch, juice, snack and a water to get them through a fun-filled day.

Some of the things coming to camp are “Music Mondays” appearance­s Susan B. Anthony, the 4-H Club, Game Show Guy. The kids are also busy with sports of all kinds, board and memory games, arts and crafts and more. The camp goes swimming to Sandy Beach on Tuesday afternoons for some water fun and many field trips are planned, which range from $15 to $50. Trips include Thomaston Lanes for Bowling, R&B Sports for mini-golf, go-carts, pitching machines and ice cream; Quassy Amusement Park, Mount Tom, Lake Compounce, and more.

Arbor Day Foundation offers tree care booklet

The Arbor Day Foundation is offering a handy tree-care booklet designed to help people plant and care for trees. To receive the Conservati­on Trees booklet, send a $3 check along with your name and address to Conservati­on Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, or order online at arborday.org/conservati­ontrees.

Anyone can receive Conservati­on Trees, a user-friendly booklet featuring illustrati­ons, colorful photos, and easily understood descriptio­ns, by making a $3 donation to the Foundation this month.

The booklet provides details about the right way to plant and prune trees. It also includes tips on using shade trees and windbreaks to save on energy costs, attract songbirds, and create a living snow fence.
