Sally Terrell & Friends play the Poli Club
WATERBURY » The Summer Jazz Series at the Palace Theater Poli Club continues with Sally Terrell & Friends on Friday June 23 at the Palace Theater Poli Club. The series is produced by New England Arts and Entertainment. Showtime is at 8 p.m.; the doors and the bar open at 7:15 p.m.
Terrell began a lifelong love affair with piano and singing at age six, poking out melodies alongside her father, a classically trained pianist and jazz aficionado who passed along his love of George Gershwin, Errol Garner, and Julie London while discovering his youngest daughter could play and sing by ear. After building a career as a college writing teacher, Terrell began singing professionally when she and partner John Sarlo formed the Green Jazz Band.
Whether serenading audiences in French, Portuguese or English, Terrell’s intuitive interpretations and razor-sharp ear showcase her velvety alto. Her first CD, Mood Swing, was released in 2015.
Kevin O’Neil joins on guitar. He embodies a propulsive style and technical virtuosity that landed him on the world tour and several recordings with legendary saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master Anthony Braxton, establishing his own reputation in avantgarde jazz. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Hartt School of Music and a PhD in Music Composition from University of Southampton in England. He is a professor of music at Southern Connecticut State University and Tunxis Community College and teaches at the Essex, CTbased Community Music School. O’Neil joined the Green Jazz Band in 2015.
They are joined by John Mobilio on bass, a multi-talented musician who performs regularly with a number of jazz combos and big bands in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts. He brings his joy of jazz and music to every aspect of his work as a performer and director of the Waterbury Arts Magnet School, where he was a semi-finalist for the Grammy Educator Award in 2013. He is working on arranging and performing in a Linda Ronstadt Tribute Concert and will perform
again at the Poli Club with the Chris Coogan Quartet this coming fall.
Jim Royle on drums rounds out the quartet. His name has become synonymous with jazz in the New England club circuit, and his articulate playing is documented on several CDs. Jim studied various aspects of percussion with world recognized masters such as Max Roach, Alan Dawson, and Keith Copeland. He is dedicated to passing his love of music on to future musicians, and the Jim Royle Drum Studio, now in its 30th year, is well known for turning out remarkable performers who are exposed to many aspects of percussion. Jim was chapter president of the Percussive Arts Society for 17 years, and he is on the faculty at Western CT State University. He will return to the Poli Club this fall with the Chris Coogan Quartet.
