Sabathia heads to disabled list

-

ANAHEIM, CALIF. » New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia was diagnosed with Grade 2 left hamstring strain Wednesday and could be out at least four weeks.

The Yankees have yet to place Sabathia, whose next scheduled start would have been Sunday, on the disabled list. He injured the hamstring pushing off the mound Tuesday.

It could be a big loss for the Yankees, who were seeing the left-hander pitch like an ace again in his last six starts (0.99 ER A).

Grade 2 hamstring strains can take four to eight weeks to fully recover. Though normally associated with runners, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said they also can be a difficult challenge for pitchers.

“It can be an issue when it’s a push-off leg,” Girardi said. “That’s the leg you’re using to drive downhill and push off on.”

Girardi said the team was undecided who would fill his spot in the rotation. 1. Jason Day: Overdue for another run at a major championship. Has had an indifferent year so far, due in part to his mother’s battle with cancer. He should be on the leaderboard Sunday afternoon at Erin Hills — and the Travelers Championship could have the U.S. Open champion teeing it up next week. 2. Branden Grace: Has a pair of top-6 finishes the past two years in this event. At another unknown course, the 25th-ranked South African could be primed for his first major championship. 3. Jon Rahm: Seven top-10 finishes for the rookie who has shot to 10th in the world rankings. Rookies don’t usually contend in Opens but Rahm is no ordinary rookie.
