TRASH PICKUP: In observance of Independen­ce Day, there will be no curbside collection of garbage and recyclable­s on Tuesday July 4 in Torrington. There will be a one-day delay for pickup of all municipal solid waste and recyclable­s for the remainder of the week following July 4. Friday’s regularly scheduled collection will be on Saturday. The regular schedule will resume the following week. JULY 4 PARADE: The Barkhamste­d Lions Club will hold a July 4th Parade at 10:30 a.m. in the Pleasant Valley section of town. The Star Band will be formed to provide marching band music for the parade and the brief post-parade ceremony at the Barkhamste­d Elementary School. All are welcome to attend the event. SUMMER LECTURE: The Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society continues its 1st Tuesday at 7 summer lecture series at 7 p.m. at the South Canaan Meetinghou­se, 12 Rte. 63, Falls Village, with guest speaker will be Adam Sher, program director of Isabella Freedman, a Jewish retreat center located in Falls Village since 1956, presenting “Who is Isabella Freedman Anyway?” There will be hot dogs, Isabella Freedman’s own sauerkraut, and other light refreshmen­ts available beginning at 6 p.m. The evening is free and open to the public; donations are greatly appreciate­d. Benjamin Tallmadge will be conducted on Tuesday at 12 p.m. at East Litchfield Cemetery. The ceremony will be given by Mary Floyd Tallmadge Chapter NSDAR along with the Gov. Oliver Wolcott Sr. Branch NSSAR, Charles Merriman Society NSCAR and First Litchfield Artillery. The public is invited to attend. PET PARADE: Celebrate Independen­ce Day with the Litchfield Historical Society’s annual Pet Parade and Turnof-the-Century Festival, July 4, 2:15-4:30 p.m. Community members, with or without pets, are invited to participat­e. The cannon fires at 2 p.m. Pets should arrive no earlier than 2:15 to register for the parade and be eligible for awards. After the parade, enjoy ice cream and old-fashioned lawn games. Participan­ts will have the opportunit­y to compete in egg and spoon races, a tug of war, a sunflower seed spitting contest, and three-legged races. Refreshmen­ts donated by Stop & Shop. The event is free and open to the public. Pets of any kind are welcome, but all pets must be either on a leash or in a cage and, where applicable, must come with a rabies certificat­e. ROAD CLOSURE: Bantam Road (State Route 202) in Litchfield will be closed both ways to traffic for the installati­on of a culvert project in Bantam in the vicinity of the Quiet Zone. This road closure will take place from 6 p.m. on Friday, July 7 through 5 a.m. on Monday, July 10. Detours will be designated by the State of Connecticu­t. COLEBROOK CELEBRATIO­N: Colebrook’s annual Independen­ce Day Celebratio­n will be held July 4. A Children’s Bicycle Parade begins at 10:15 a.m. for those with their decorated bicycle, wagon, scooter, or other mode of transporta­tion. Spring sports teams dressed in uniform are invited to march also. At 11 a.m. at the Colebrook Congregati­onal Church, a program honoring WWI, “Entry, Preparatio­n, Battle, Peace & Remembranc­e” will be held, sponsored by the Colebrook Associates. A buffet luncheon, including homemade pies, on the Green following the program. All are welcome to join in this tradition which has continued for over 60 years.
