‘Fiddler on the Roof’ opens July 29

-

BETHLEHEM » Clay & Wattles Theater Company, 249 Flanders Road, Bethlehem, presents “Fiddler on the Roof,” opening July 29 at The Gary The Olivia Theater.

The opening night gala is scheduled for Saturday, July 29 at 7:30 p.m. The musical runs through Aug. 20. With music and lyrics by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein this much heralded musical will make you laugh and pull at your heart strings.

Selling out performances during its previous staging at The Gary The Olivia Theater, the 2017 production will once again feature Thomas Camm as Tevyeh the dairyman. He will be joined by a professional cast and with new choreography and staging by director/choreographer Sally Camm.

The original Broadway production of “Fiddler” opened in 1964 with Zero Mostel in the role of Tevyeh and ran for over 3,200 performances (900 were sold out) with Jerome Robbins holding the dual roles of director and choreographer. Winning 9 Tony Awards including Direction, Score, Book and Choreography the musical was followed by the highly successful film version in 1971 starring the Israeli born actor Topol and directed by Canadian Norman Jewison.

Loosely based on the stories of the revered Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem (Tevyeh and his Daughters) the musical is set in a Jewish Shtetl during Tsarist Russia in 1905. The Musical tells the story of Tevyeh and Golde, their five daughters and the villagers of Anatevka and their trials and joys during a time of great social change in Russia.
