HEAT WAVE IS HERE

- By Jim Shay

Part of Connecticut are in the middle of a heat wave.

It started Wednesday, and the National Weather Service says we could get two more days of 90-degree temperatures. To be classified as a heat wave, there have to be at least three consecutive days with high temperatures of at least 90 degrees.

On Wednesday, temperatures in New Haven and Torrington were hovering around 89 degrees, while they reached into the 90s in Middletown, Bridgeport, Hartford and other parts of the state.

Daytime temperatures are expected in the 90s through Friday and into the upper 80s for the weekend.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy reminded residents that as the state continues to experience hot and humid conditions, cooling centers are open in towns and cities throughout the state and can be located by calling 2-1-1.

In Torrington, cooling centers will be available at the City Hall Auditorium, 140 Main St., on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will be open during normal business hours starting July 24 if the heat wave persists, officials said.

Torrington Health and Rehab, 225 Wyoming Ave., is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The Sullivan Senior Center, 88 East Albert St., is open to senior citizens only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon-

day through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.

An air quality alert has been issued for the Connecticut shoreline with high ozone levels expected. When pollution levels are elevated, it’s recommended that people consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects.

People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with pre existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.

The next several days look like a great day to hit the beach, if you can. Mostly sunny skies are forecast, but as is the case on many hot summer days, there’s a chance of some pop-up thunderstorms. The water temperature in Long Island Sound is around 75 degrees. Lake Candlewood’s water temperature is 82 degrees.
