Bookstore, gallery to hold jewelry trunk show

SHARON » Darren Winston, Bookseller, a vintage bookstore and gallery in Northwest Connecticu­t, will host a trunk show featuring a wide selection of fine jewelry by renowned New York City jeweler, Grant A. Peacock on Saturday, July 29, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

Establishe­d in 1909, Grant A. Peacock, Inc. is a third-generation family-run retail jewelry business, which also offers custom jewelry creation, restoratio­n, and redesign services. This New York City firm, with showrooms on Park Avenue, is now run by Kathleen Peacock Benchley, granddaugh­ter of its founder. After more than one hundred years in the jewelry business, Grant A. Peacock, Inc. continues to be famous for their handson, personaliz­ed approach to their customers

The trunk show will feature a range of silver and gold jewelry and cufflinks—both contempora­ry and traditiona­l designs—incorporat­ing gemstones and precious metals to achieve timeless yet modern looks.

This one-day event with Grant A. Peacock, Inc. is presented by Darren Winston, Bookseller at his Modernists­tyle showroom at 81 Main Street in Sharon. The showroom now features an exhibit by New York City artist Marilla Palmer, Garden of My Mind, which will be on display through July 29th.

Society to host social gathering

COLEBROOK » The Colebrook Historical Society will host a social gathering, featuring refreshmen­ts and lively conversati­on, Friday, July 21 at 7 p.m.

Highlighti­ng the evening will be a presentati­on by guest Lynn Whelchel, M.D., C.M. Dr. Whelchel, a longtime resident of Colebrook, enjoyed a noted career as a surgeon. He served with the U.S. Army and did a tour in Vietnam. He has degrees from McGill, Dartmouth, and MIT. He did his cardiothor­acic surgical residency at Tufts, and had his own surgical practice in Torrington until his retirement in 2001.

Since then, Dr. Whelchel has devoted himself to researchin­g the wonderful technologi­cal advances (and recessions) in medicine. He’ll share the most exciting of them in his presentati­on What’s up Doc?- covering what’s happened to the “Big 3” in the last seventeen years – cancer, circulator­y disease (heart, etc.) and brain failure. According to Dr. Whelchel, we’re going to live longer and, hopefully, happier and healthier lives. Do come find out how.

Camp Moe carnival is July 28

TORRINGTON » Camp MOE invites the community an evening of fun for all ages on July 28, 4:30-7 p.m. at 1145 Brandy Hill Road, Torrington. here will be carnival games run by the camp counselors, a bounce house, an inflatable obstacle course, and a dunk tank! Food will also be sold at the event; hot dogs, chips, soda, water, popcorn, cotton candy, and ice cream will be available for a small charge. Outing Club plans July 23 hike

LITCHFIELD » Outing Club will take a hike on July 23 at the Northfield Dam followed by a potluck picnic hosted by Robyn and Russ.

Members will meet at the entrance of Northfield Brook Lake (US Army Corps) off Route 254 at the Litchfield/ Thomaston line at 1 p.m., hike around the grounds and nature trails and see the remains of an old gristmill, sawmill and textile mill. 1.7 mile hike, half along the brook.

After the main hike the group will take a very short drive, less than a mile, to see the beautiful waterfalls where the Northfield Knife Shop was located in the mid-1800. After that, the group will go to a member’s house for a picnic and bonfire. Bring a chair and a casserole, salad or side dish to share. Outing Club activities are open to all single and married persons. Children are also welcome accompanie­d by an adult. Outing Club activities are non-smoking, non-alcohol and no pets. If weather is questionab­le, check your email around 10 a.m. the morning of the hike for updates. If weather is rainy, members will have games and food at Robin’s house at 3 p.m.
