NCCC receives grant for student needs

-

WINSTED » Northwestern Connecticut Community College has received a $6,000 grant from the Keroden Endowed Fund, a fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation, Inc. This start-up grant has been awarded to support both the campus Food for Thought student food pantry and the NCCC Student Emergency Fund; providing assistance to food insecure students and students facing emergency needs.

“I am delighted to receive this grant,” said NCCC President Dr. Michael Rooke, in a written statement. “These funds will be used to support two muchneeded projects here for our students; the creation of a food pantry to help with students who do not have enough to eat, and the emergency fund to help students with unexpected financial hardships that can derail them from staying in college.”

The Food for Thought pantry was created on campus by NCCC’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) student club along with faculty advisors Crystal Wiggins and Todd Bryda and is expected to open on campus to students this fall. The NCCC Student Emergency Fund was created through NCCC Foundation funding and private donations in 2016 to assist students with financial needs based on the specific need and individual circumstances. So far, the fund has assisted almost a dozen students with grocery and gas cards, rent and utility bill payments, and certification exam fees.

The Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation Inc. was founded in 1969 and services 20 towns in the Connecticut northwest corner with more than 260 funds under management including the Keroden Endowed Fund, established in 2002.

Society acknowledges semi-annual grant

COLEBROOK » The Colebrook Historical Society would like to acknowledge the generous semi-annual distribution it has received from The Draper Foundation, a fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation.

“Jim and Shirley Draper were longtime residents of Colebrook. Throughout their lives, they devoted themselves to the service of their community. Their splendid work continues, thanks to the foundation established posthumously in their name. The CHS is honored to be one of the 19 nonprofits that receive regular distributions from the fund. This dependable source of support enables the CHS to better carry out their own mission of service to Colebrook,” members said in a statement.

The society is actively engaged in the restoration and preservation of the two historic Colebrook buildings in its care — the Seymour Inn, and the Rock School, and sponsors many events throughout the year for residents of all ages.
