WINSTED » Police arrested a local man Thursday after he allegedly attacked two elderly women at a book store earlier this week.

Aaron Bugbee, 24, was arrested and charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree sexual assault, third- degree sexual assault, second-degree assault on people over 60 and breach of peace, police said.

At approximately 4 p.m. Monday, Bugbee entered and attacked

two women at the Community Book Store, 414 Main St., according to police. The women, 67 and 69 years old, fought back against their attacker and suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

Based on the description provided by the victims and witnesses, along with video surveillance, an arrest warrant was issued Wednesday night for Bugbee. He was found Thursday in Torrington and taken into custody without incident, police said.

Bail was set at $75,000, police said. Bugbee was not arraigned in Bantam Superior Court Thursday, according to court staff. He will likely be arraigned Friday.

The Community Bookstore opened in September, and is operated by Ralph Nader, the Office of the Community Lawyer, and The Law Works, a local non-profit.

Community Lawyer Charlene LaVoie declined to comment on the alleged incident Thursday afternoon.

Winchester Police Chief William Fitzgerald said Thursday that police were still working to determine a motive in the case.
