NEW CHESS CLUB: A new group, the Litchfield County Chess Club, meets Thursdays at the Torrington Library, 12 Daycoeton Place, Torrington, from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. on Thursdays. FIREMAN’S CARNIVAL: Winsted’s annual fireman’s carnival will be held Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-19on Rowley Field in Winsted. The carnival features, food including Tower 1famous fried dough, a beer garden, dunk tank, rides, games, bingo, blower ball, and live music. A DJ will play music on Friday and Saturday night. Wrist band night is Wednesday and fireworks will be held on Friday night. One of the last parades of the season will be held on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. down Main Street.

REFLECTION­S ON SERVICE: Mother and Daughter Reflection­s on Service: Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe with Olivia May and Mary O’Neill, will be held Aug. 17, 6p.m. at the Scoville Library, Salisbury. Hear them share stories and insights from their service trip to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservatio­n in LaPlant, South Dakota.

FOOD DRIVE: The Winsted Fire Department will hold a food drive to support The Salvation Army’s Food Pantry in Winsted. Donations will be accepted at the Fireman’s Carnival Aug. 16-17in a bin next to the Dunking Booth. Donors receive 3free balls at the booth. The Salvation Army will continue to accept donations at the carnival Aug. 18-19.

SUMMER CONCERTS: Torrington Parks and Recreation announce the schedule for the annual summer concert series, which will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays starting June 20 at Coe Memorial Park. TRAIL SYSTEM CLOSED: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, Thomaston Dam, recently announced that the Thomaston Dam trail system will be temporaril­y closed to public riding on Friday Aug. 18, Saturday Aug. 19and Sunday Aug. 20for a Netra/AMA event weekend. Motorcycle Hare Scramble events will occur on both Saturday and Sunday. Two youth classes will compete on Saturday and two adult classes will compete on Sunday. While public riding is not permitted, visitors are welcome as spectators. Otherwise, the dirt bike riding area is open through Columbus Day.
