Old Home Day ‘with a twist’ on Sunday

-

BARKHAMSTED » Members of the First Congregational Church of Barkhamsted will again host the traditional Old Home Day on Sunday, Sept. 10.

Pprograms begin at 10 a.m. with a congregational worship service followed by a potluck lunch outside the church on the portico, and will end with a walking tour of the historic Barkhamsted Hollow to the east of the church. The church is located at 6 Old Town Hall Road in Barkhamsted. For directions or information visit www.barkhamstedfirstchurch.org.

“We are hopeful that any members of the community seeking a home church or those who have taken a break from services this summer will consider joining us this fall,” said the church’s minister, the Rev. Susan Wyman. “New residents and visitors to the area are always welcome here in Barkhamsted. We would love to have them come, learn about the town and church history, bring friends and children for the start of our Sunday school programs on September 10, which run during the 10 to 11 a.m. service.”

Old Home Day will also feature a special music program developed by our organist and music committee for the church. This year there will be special music by children from the church playing multiple instruments. September 10 also offers an opportunity for everyone attending to pose for a group picture on the front portico. Wyman’s sermon for Sept. 10 will be “Hello My Name is .... ” The music will also carry this theme.

Activities will be held on the church portico or lawn, weather permitting, near the intersection of Rte. 181, Boettner and Day Roads.

Paul Hart, a church member who is active in the Barkhamsted Historical Society, will give a brief talk on the historic roots of Old Home Day as well as lead the walking tour to historic sites near the Barkhamsted Reservoir, including the original meeting house, cemetery and schoolhouse.

All are welcome and all services are free. For more information call Rev. Wyman at 860-379-7300, or on the day of the event call the church at 860-379-5864.
