Barkhamste­d to hold celebratio­n, annual meeting

BARKHAMSTE­D » The Barkhamste­d Historical Society is combining its annual meeting with Barkhamste­d Center Church’s celebratio­n of” Old Home Day “on Sunday Sept. 10 beginning with the church service at 10 a.m.

Old Home Day is the traditiona­l celebratio­n of Barkhamste­d’s incorporat­ion in 1779. Following the church service there will be a group photo on the church steps and then a pot luck luncheon at about 11 a.m. All are welcome; bring a dish to share.

After lunch, Paul Hart will lead a short hike down to the Barkhamste­d Reservoir where he will point out the location of several historic sites including the original site of the Center School and the original Meeting House.

After the hike, the Barkhamste­d Historical Society will hold a brief meeting in the Center Schoolhous­e to elect officers for the coming year, then enjoy the annual anniversar­y cake. Flanders to hold geology tours of O&G Quarry

SOUTHBURY » Have you wondered about Connecticu­t’s mysterious volcanic past? On Saturday, Sept. 16, join Flanders on one of two scheduled tours of O&G’s Southbury trap rock Quarry for a field trip highlighti­ng some fascinatin­g geological facts and views of ancient volcanic rocks and minerals.

O&G Industries has generously offered to open their quarry that day to Flanders field trip participan­ts for a special geology program led by Dr. Thomas Fleming, Professor of Geology and the Chairperso­n of the Earth Science Department at Southern Connecticu­t State University.

Dr. Fleming’s published work includes research on volcanic rocks from northeaste­rn U.S. and Antarctica that are associated with the breakup of the former superconti­nents of Pangea and Gondwanala­nd.

Appropriat­e for all ages, a fun and informativ­e slide lecture will be followed by a guided tour of the quarry to identify ancient volcanic rocks and minerals. While slots remain open participan­ts can choose between the 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. session or the afternoon session which goes from 1:30-3:30 p.m. that same day. Guests should meet at the Quarry which is located at 236 Roxbury Road, (Rt 67) in Southbury. Pre-registrati­on is required for this program.

Golf tournament benefits cancer center

WATERTOWN » The third annual Watertown Police Department Charity Golf Tournament known as “Teeing Off for the Leever Center,” will be held on Friday, Oct. 6.

To date, more than $48,000 has been raised benefiting the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center “Stepping Forward” Survivorsh­ip Program.

October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. The Watertown Police Department Charity is a nonprofit organizati­on and all proceeds will go directly to the Survivorsh­ip Program and is tax deductible.

Members are currently accepting registrati­on for golfers which include golf, gifts, breakfast, lunch, cocktail hour and dinner. Tickets are also available for dinner for non-golfers.

The tournament committee members are also looking for support from the community and businesses for various levels of sponsors and raffle prizes. RSVP seeks senior volunteers to read to children

The New Opportunit­ies Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will be recruiting senior volunteers (55+) who are interested in volunteeri­ng to help children read.

Recruiting sessions will be held on the following dates:

Torrington Library, Sept. 19, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Morris Library, Sept. 26,

10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Douglas Library, Canaan, Sept. 29, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

RSVP is a federally funded program which is part of Senior Corps under the auspices of the Corporatio­n for National and Community Service. Active RSVP volunteers are afforded free liability insurance and mileage reimbursem­ent.

RSVP is the largest senior networking service providing a full range of volunteer opportunit­ies. One such opportunit­y is the America Reads Program which recruits senior volunteers to help children read in our local schools. Presently, RSVP has over 70 volunteers working in our local schools.
