1. Impressive output: Yale is coming off one of its best offensive efforts in years in a 56-28 win at Lehigh on Saturday. It was the most points Yale has scored in a game since the 2003 season-opener (62-28 win over Towson) and the largest margin of victory since a 51-13 win at Cornell in 2014. The Bulldogs split their touchdowns evenly, four rushing, four passing.

2. Defense not shabby, either: Yale’s defense came up with big plays against Lehigh, including five sacks, two of which caused fumbles that resulted in Yale scores. Sophomore defensive end Charles Callender and senior linebacker Matt Oplinger each had two sacks.

3. Hen-pecked: In Cornell’s season-opener on Saturday at Delaware, the Big Red committed five first-half turnovers, resulting in 27 points, and Delaware (2-1) rolled to a 41-14 victory.

4. Last year: Yale committed three costly turnovers in the first half and trailed 24-3 at halftime up in Ithaca, New York. It was too much to overcome as the Big Red wound up with a 27-13 victory.

5. Hey Bulldog: Saturday is the first birthday of Walker (a.k.a. Handsome Dan XVIII), who began his reign as Yale’s mascot last November. The Yale band will pay tribute to Walter on his official birth date at halftime. There will also be a “passing of the leash” ceremony involving former mascot caretaker Chris Getman (Class of ‘64) and current caretaker Kevin Discepolo (’09).
