FIVE THINGS TO WATCH

1. Gift of grab: Senior Arkeel Newsome of Ansonia needs 22 receiving yards to become the first UConn running back with 1,000 career yards. With 86 career catches, he is five shy of the UConn running back record of 91 set by Joe Markus from 1979-82.

2

. The kids are all right: Freshmen Nate Hopkins and Kevin Mensah have picked up the slack. No other FBS team gets a higher percentage of rushing yards from its freshmen running backs than UConn (92.2 percent), which ranks just ahead of the mark of 91.5 from Louisiana-Lafayette heading into the weekend.

3. Stuck in neutral: UConn coach Randy Edsall has spoken about having the Huskies start fast. However, they have done anything but that, punting on their opening drives against both Holy Cross and Virginia. UConn has gone 16 games without scoring a touchdown on its opening drive, managing just a pair of field goals.

4. Spreading the wealth: Both UConn and ECU bid adieu to record-breaking receivers. Noel Thomas, currently on the Detroit Lions practice squad, caught a program single-season 100 passes as a senior. ECU’s Zay Jones, who had three catches in the first two games for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, topped that by snaring an FBS record 158 passes for the Pirates a season ago.

5. Change in plans: This is believed to be UConn’s first Sunday home game since 1914 and just the third Sunday game in the program’s history.
