Centennial celebration includes time capsule ceremony
WINSTED — The Friends of Main Street, the Winchester Economic Development Commission, the Winchester Historical Society, and the Winsted schools have joined together to celebrate the Winsted Centennial.
Winsted was officially recognized by the state as a city in 1917. To commemorate that event, a time capsule will be buried on the grounds of the Winchester Historical Society on Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. The capsule is to be opened in 2067. The rain date is Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
The Gilbert School, Winchester Schools, Explorations Charter School and St. Anthony School have joined together to have a contest among all grade levels for the students to create an essay, poem, drawing or any creative representation of what they believe Winsted will look like in 2067.
The four school principals will pick the first- and second-place winners at each grade level, who will receive a cash prize donated by the Winchester Historical Society and will have their submissions placed in the capsule.
The entries will be on display, along with the time capsule and the stone marker, at the Friends of Main Street’s Fall Festival to be held on Main Street on Oct. 7. The time capsule will also contain photographs of present day Winsted taken by local photographer LaraGreen Kazlauskas.
The celebration event of the burial of the time capsule at the historical society grounds Oct. 14, will feature the Gilbert High School band.
The celebration is free and open to the public.
