The Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Arts Fund, in collaboration with Five Points Gallery in Torrington, will open its 2017-2018 season with a “A Celebration of Music and Visual Arts” at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, at the gallery.

Katie Hyun, one of the top young violinists in the classical music world, will give a solo performance of works ranging from Bach to Bartok.

The concert is free and attendees can also view works by artists Gus Mazzocca, Zahra Nazari and Jason Werner. Five Points Gallery is at 33 Main St., Torrington.

Called “a virtuoso by anyone’s measure” (The Berkshire Review) and praised for her “great sensitivity and top-shelf artistry” (Cleveland.com), Hyun has appeared as a soloist with the Houston Symphony, the Dallas Chamber Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others.

Hyun is the founder and director of the Quodlibet Ensemble, a small chamber orchestra that debuted to great acclaim in 2008 and which has performed in Collinsville for the Shepherd Music Series.

She also is a founding member of the award-winning Amphion String Quartet. The quartet’s debut CD was featured among the “Best of 2015” in the New York Times. Huyn recently was appointed concertmaster of Trinity Wall Street’s NOVUSNY, the resident contemporary music orchestra.

The Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Arts Fund is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the fine and performing arts. All funding comes from donations by supporters and patrons.
