Parents’ guild to host fall festival

WINSTED — Celebrate Halloween at the St. Anthony School Parents Guild Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 4-6 p.m. at Ruwet Farm, located on East Pearl Road in Torrington. The event is open to the public.

The cost of $10 per child includes a tractor ride to the pumpkin patch to pick a pumpkin to take home (parents are allowed to ride too), visiting the haunted house, walking through the corn maze, games, and a bonfire by the pond. Hot dogs, salt potatoes, popcorn, water, juice and soda will also available for purchase. All children attending the event must be accompanie­d by an adult (no drop-offs). Children and adults are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes — no weapons, masks or inappropri­ate costumes – remember that there will be little ones at the festival who may be frightened by scary costumes.

City announces leaf, yard waste pickup schedule

TORRINGTON — Leaf and yard waste pickup for Torrington residents will begin Monday, Nov. 6, and end Friday, Dec. 1, weather permitting. Leaves and yard waste must be placed curbside for pickup on the same day as garbage pickup. Do not call to schedule pickup. All yard waste is collected in separate trucks for recycling. Do not mix or place yard waste in piles with garbage.

Yard waste includes horticultu­ral trimmings, which are free of stones, dirt, and sharp objects; or other natural organic matter, such as grass clippings, discarded from yards and gardens.

Only leaves and yard waste bagged in biodegrada­ble paper bags or tied into bundles not exceeding fifty (50) pounds in weight will be picked up. Individual branches shall not exceed 4 feet in length or 3 inches in diameter. Leaves or yard waste raked into piles curbside will not be picked up. Biodegrada­ble paper bags can be purchased at many local stores.

Residents are reminded that leaves and grass trimmings are a recyclable material and cannot be picked-up as part of our normal curbside collection and disposal program.

Library program explores mysteries, secrets of light

LITCHFIELD — Joe Dougherty presents Light: Its Mysteries & Hidden Secrets, Oct. 25, 7-8 p.m. at the Oliver Wolcott Library, 160 South St., Litchfield. This presentati­on will explore light … what it is and how scientists have harnessed it to reveal much of what we know about our universe. Specifical­ly, we will learn about the chemical compositio­n of stars, how to determine the distance and temperatur­es of astronomic­al objects and how scientists are discoverin­g new “exoplanets” daily.

Dougherty is the President of the Litchfield Hills Amateur Astronomy Club. He has specialize­d in the field of astro-imaging for nearly 10 years. He has given numerous presentati­ons on imaging to the public and other amateur astronomer­s over the years. Recently, he has been exploring the use of new tools, software and imaging cameras used in the field of Spectrosco­py of stars. He resides in Waterbury, CT and holds an M.B.A. and B.S. in Mathematic­s.

Shrine to hold annual fall dinner

LITCHFIELD —The Shrine of Lourdes in Litchfield is holding its annual Harvest Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. in Pilgrim Hall. The menu features roast pork with maple glaze, winter vegetables, sweet potato casserole and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. Pumpkin cookies, coffee and tea complete this feast.

Art league to host demonstrat­ion

WATERTOWN — The Watertown Art League will host a live watercolor painting demonstrat­ion by Profession­al Artist, Shauna Shane, Monday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m. at the First Congregati­onal Church Hall, 40 DeForest St. in Watertown. The demonstrat­ion is free and open to the public.

Working in a variety of mediums including watercolor, oil, and pastel, Shane’s paintings are saturated with light and color, informed by many years of painting from life. Her paintings of the landscape, still life, animals and the figure reflect a solid academic training as well as the ability to communicat­e the energy and unique atmosphere of a scene. Selected in 2010 as Resident Artist at the New Britain Museum of American Art, Shane began her career as Resident Artist at Yellowston­e National Park. Shauna has exhibited in internatio­nal competitio­ns around the country, where she has received many major awards.

A profession­al painter for more than 33 years, Shane is represente­d in collection­s in the US and around the world, including the Governor’s portrait in the State Capitol in Helena, Montana. She is a Signature Member of CT Pastel Society, an Elected Artist Member of the Lyme Art Associatio­n and CT Plein air Society.
