Schools, civic groups plan Veterans Day observance­s

Veterans Day is Saturday, Nov. 11. The federal holiday is Friday, Nov. 10. A number of events are scheduled for Friday and Saturday to honor local men and women who served in the armed forces, as well as those who are actively serving their country.

Litchfield

Center School students are holding the annual veterans assembly on Thursday. The event is not open to the public, but welcomes veterans from the Litchfield community for a social hour, a program with music and a chance for the invited guests to speak to the children. The assembly is an opportunit­y for the town’s youngest citizens to meet the men and women who have served in the armed forces on their own special day.

Winsted

Northweste­rn Connecticu­t Community College’s chapter of the internatio­nal honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, is hosting a Veterans Appreciati­on Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. in the Veteran’s Oasis (White Building), on the NCCC campus. In honor of their service to the nation, student veterans will receive service flags as a gift from the Honors Society. The flags will then be permanentl­y displayed in the Veteran’s Oasis.

Burlington

In Burlington, Lewis S. Mills High School is hosting its annual Celebratio­n of Veterans program on Friday. Luncheon will be from 12-1 p.m. followed by an assembly in the auditorium from 1-2 p.m.

All Burlington and Harwinton veterans are invited to attend. Throughout the day, community members are invited to view the students’ artwork displayed in the main lobby and adjacent hallway. Torrington

On Saturday, the Torrington Veterans Support Committee, and its member groups invites the public, current military personnel, and all veterans, to join them for the annual Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Coe Memorial Park. If it rains, the ceremony will be held in the civic center at the park.

If anyone has an American flag that is torn, faded or damaged, they can bring it and a member of a veterans organizati­on will take the flag and see that it is properly retired.

North Canaan

State Rep. Brian Ohler, R-Canaan, is hosting a Veteran Stand Down event on Saturday, 12-3 p.m., at the Couch-Pipa #6851 VFW on 104 South Canaan Road/ Route 7. The event will feature services including flu shots, blood pressure screenings, general assistance and a free lunch, as well as a collection of goods and items to stuff a Humvee. All donated items will be distribute­d to Northwest Corner veterans in need.

Harwinton

HARWINTON— The Harwinton American Legion Post 137 will hold a Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the town green at the intersecti­on of South Rd. and Rte. 4 (Burlington Road).

Salisbury

SALISBURY — The Town of Salisbury is updating the War Veterans Honor Roll Monument next to Town Hall.
