TORRINGTON — A city resident was charged with possession with intent to sell after being found with 3.5 ounces of marijuana during a traffic stop, police said.

Sean P. Cote, 23, of 267 Circle Drive, was arrested Sunday and also charged with possession of a controlled substance or less than a half-ounce of marijuana, possession in a school zone, possession of drug paraphernalia in a school zone and possession of narcotics.

An officer saw a vehicle driven by Cote fail to completely stop at the intersection of Harwinton Avenue and Hill Street and conducted a traffic stop, according to a probable cause report.

There was “a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the interior of the vehicle,” police wrote in the report.

Cote told the officer he had marijuana in his pocket and in a backpack in the vehicle, according to the report.

When searching the backpack, the officer found three mason jars containing a total of 3.5 ounces of marijuana, a mason jar containing rice, small and larger plastic bags, rubber bands and a scale, according to the report. Six Xanax tablets were also found in the vehicle, police said.

Cote was arrested and held in lieu of a $2,500 cash bond, police said. He was arraigned Monday in Superior Court in Torrington, where his bond was set at $5,000 cash or surety and the case was continued until Nov. 28.
