KEEP AN EYE ON
⏩ More hands on deck: There were times last season when UConn relied on a six-player rotation and rarely went with more than seven players until the score got out of hand. Crystal Dangerfield is now a starter after coming off the bench in 25 of 31 games as a freshman. Duke transfer Azurá Stevens and reigning national high school player of the year Megan Walker will be key contributors off the bench. It will be interesting to see how much time UConn coach Geno Auriemma gives sophomores Molly Bent and Kyla Irwin and freshmen Mikayla Coombs, Andra Espinoza-Hunter and Lexi Gordon.
⏩ McPhee needs a helping hand: The outstanding Stanford teams in the past have relied on a variety of scorers. However in a season-opening loss to Ohio State, three of its five starters failed to hit a field goal. Guard Brittany McPhee did her part with 24 points, but the other four starters missed 13 of their 16 shots.
⏩ Number to top all numbers: A quick peek through the NCAA record book and it won’t be hard to find lists of UConn’s remarkable winning streaks, including the record 111-game run that ended in last year’s Final Four. However, perhaps the most amazing streak is not listed. The Huskies have not lost back-to-back games since falling to Providence in the Big East tournament and to Louisville in the NCAA tournament in 1993. That is 886 games played without tasting defeat in consecutive games. In 14 of the last 16 games after a loss, UConn has won by at least 25 points.
