Borges’ Top 25 ballot: WVU out

- By David Borges

Opening weekend saw just one surprise among Top 25 teams, when Texas A&M blasted West Virginia by 23 points in Germany.

And the Aggies were without their top NBA prospect (Robert Williams) and point guard (J.J. Caldwell). And the game wasn’t even that close.

And, the Mountaineers tumble off my ballot this week. Purdue, which totaled 216 points in a pair of wins over weaker sisters, is my only new addition.

This week’s ballot:

1. Michigan State: Game of the Century on Tuesday, when Spartans face Duke in Chicago.

2. Duke: Blue Devils do what Kentucky couldn’t — blow Utah Valley out of the water.

3. Arizona: The easier question would be who

was able to play, coach in Wildcats’ first two games.

4. Kansas: Showdown with Kentucky Tuesday night in the Windy City.

5. Villanova: Jalen Brunson could be Big East’s top player, Omari Spellman its top “rookie.”

6. Cincinnati: Gary Clark joins 1,000-point Club. It only seems like 500 of them have come against UConn.

7. Kentucky: Wildcats struggled to beat Utah Valley, Vermont. Next up, Kansas.

8. Wichita State: ESPN’s BPI rates Shockers as favorites to win national championship. Wow.

9. USC: De’Anthony Melton could be a casualty of FBI investigation.

10. Notre Dame: Basketball school.

11. North Carolina: Now that cloud of NCAA “investigation” is gone, Heels should start reeling in Burger Boy recruits again. Heartwarming.

12. Miami: Miami-Notre Dame will be far more intriguing in hoops this season than it was in football.

13. Texas A&M: Crushed West Virginia on neutral court, without starting point guard and best NBA prospect.

14. Florida: Gators open their season on Monday night.

15. Minnesota: Richard Pitino leads Gophers into his dad’s old stomping grounds in Providence Monday night. Should be interesting.

16. Seton Hall: Do we realize what an absolute beast Angel Delgado is?

17. Saint Mary’s: Jock Landale’s one of the best big men in the country.

18. Xavier: Trevor Bluiett will give Brunson, Delgado a challenge for Big East player of the year.

19. Louisville: Seems like only yesterday David Padgett was playing for the Cards. Now, he’s head coach.

20. Gonzaga: Rui Hachimura could be first Japanese-born player in the NBA since Yuta Tabuse 13 years ago.

21. Northwestern: Wildcats barely held off Loyoa (MD) in opener. I’m having my doubts.

22. Baylor: Six Bears hit double figures in rout over Central Arkansas.

23. UCLA: And to think, LiAngelo used to be known as the forgotten Ball brother.

24. Purdue: Enough opinions I respect tell me Boilermakers are fine without Biggy Swanigan. I’ll take their word for it. For now.

25. Rhode Island: Former Quinnipiac head man, UConn assistant Tom Moore is one of Danny Hurley’s assistants this season.
