Friday, Nov. 24

LIGHT UP MAIN: The City of Torrington Parks & Recreation Department will hold the annual Light Up Main event Friday, Nov. 24. Events begin at 4:30 p.m. at Coe Memorial Park. The event will include music by Vin Avallone, performanc­es by the Torrington High School Choir and a reading of a Christmas story to children by the mayor. The Parks & Recreation Commission will serve hot chocolate and popcorn to attendees in the park. The Coe Memorial Park tree lighting will take place at approximat­ely 5:30 p.m., followed by a parade up Main Street to City Hall for a second tree lighting and performanc­e by Nutmeg Conservato­ry dancers. The final lighting will be at the Merriman House on Main Street. Activities are free.

LARC FESTIVAL OF TREES: LARC presents its 16th Annual Festival of Trees, held and hosted by Valerie Manor at 1360 Torringfor­d St. Lead sponsors are Valerie Manor and Thomaston Savings Bank. THRIFT SHOP: Christmas at the Auxiliary Thrift Shop,120 Willow St., Winsted, is now open through Dec. 16.

WINSTED BOOKSTORE: Friday, November 24 at 7:00 p.m., Laura Nader will present her book, What the Rest Think of the West, Friday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Winsted Community Bookstore, Main Street, Winsted. Nader is Professor of Anthropolo­gy at Berkeley and has been since 1960. She was the first woman to receive a tenure-track position in that department. She was born in Winsted and is the author of more than 280 published books and articles.

HOLIDAY DECORATING CONTEST: Torrington’s Annual Outdoor Holiday Decorating Contest will be held on Tuesday, Dec 12, sponsored by the Torrington Parks & Recreation Department in conjunctio­n with Torrington Lions Club. Displays should be lit from 6-9 p.m. and consist of the following: Commercial: Christmas Display, and Residentia­l: Decorated Doorway, Nativity, or Christmas Display. HOLIDAY MARKETS: The Goshen Farmers Market is once again holding Sunday afternoon Holiday Markets every Sunday through Dec. 17, 1-4 p.m. at the St. Thomas Church Hall, 71 North Street, Route 63, Goshen. MORRIS TREE LIGHTING: Morris will light its Holiday Tree on the Morris Town Green with Christmas Carols with the Wamogo Regional High School chorus after Santa Claus officially lights the tree. Then head to community hall for hot chocolate and treats, a holiday craft and meet with Santa (grades 6 and under. Events begin at 4:30 p.m. and all are welcome.

OVERNIGHT PARKING: From now through March 31, 2018, all parking on city streets in Torrington is banned. Any vehicle parked for more than an hour during this time period will be fined $20 for each time they are in violation. During a storm, vehicles may be towed at owner expense if the owner is not available to move it. This ban is a safety measure for motorists and emergency vehicles, improving the efficiency of plowing and clearing over 40 square miles of city streets.

Watch as the lights of love for the library grow on the outside evergreen tree through the month of December. Stop by the library, mail in your donation or visitbeard­sleylibrar­y.org and donate from now through the month of December. Donations are $1 per light; $25 for 50 lights; $50 for 100 lights. All proceeds benefit the library. Checks should be made out to The Friends of the Library. On Dec. 14 at 6 p.m., the Friends will hold a tree lighting ceremony at the library.
