Save that old sweater — make mittens

- By Ginger Balch Virginia (Ginger) Balch knits, weaves and spins in all things “fibery” at her shop In Sheep’s Clothing at 10 Water St. Torrington www.in-sheeps-clothing.com or phone 860-482-3979.

Remember that wool sweater that accidentally went though the wash, and shrunk up almost beyond recognition? Did you find yourself not having the heart to actually throw it out? Perhaps you stuffed away into a drawer or closet to be dealt with later.

You are in luck. In Sheep’s Clothing, 10 Water St. has a way for you to make use of that poor sweater, by recycling it into a beautiful and serviceable pair of fleece lined mittens.

This Sunday, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., anyone handy with a pair of scissors and needle and thread (no sewing machine necessary) can learn how to make such a pair of mittens. This twohour class will take students through determining the best use of their particular sweater into a mitten design. Pattern pieces will be laid out, cut and then stitched into mittens. The fee of $30 per person includes fleece lining and pattern.

Design options will be discussed, and bringing along buttons, trims, etc, is encouraged, to make your mittens unique to you. Once students see how easy and easy these mittens are to make, they will want to “accidentally “shrink up some more sweaters. Prospective students are welcome to see the mittens on display in the shop.

Please call 860-482-3979 to register and for further information.

In Sheep’s Clothing is collecting hats, scarves and mitts for those in need. These items may be purchased and need not be handmade. Donations may be dropped off at the shop during shop hours, MonSat. 10-5, and Sun 12-4 pm.
