Russian pianist Margarita Nuller to perform in Litchfield

LITCHFIELD – St. Michael’s Parish will present a concert by pianist Margarita Nuller on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 4 p.m., part of the First Sundays at Four series.

Nuller was born into a family of musicians in St. Petersburg, Russia. She began playing the piano and taking lessons from her mother, pianist Tatiana Selkova, when she was just five years old. She then attended a music school, affiliated with the St. Petersburg Conservato­ry, for gifted children, and subsequent­ly graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservato­ry.

Nuller’s repertoire includes major works from the piano literature such as all 32 Beethoven Sonatas, all Chopin Etudes, Scherzos and Sonatas among others. Since her arrival in the United States in 1990, she has performed extensivel­y as a soloist and chamber musician in the New York metropolit­an area and in New England. She has also played recitals in Brazil, Russia, Spain, and Portugal, and has been soloist with the Arkansas Symphony, Danbury Symphony, Klassika Orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico.

Nuller played her debut recital at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City as a winner of the Artist Internatio­nal Auditions. Her CD of Russian music was released on L’Art label in 2003. She has attended many summer festivals including the SIPO in Óbidos, Portugal, the Shandelee Festival in New York, and Music in the Palaces Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia. She has also taught at the University of Hartford, the Moussorgsk­y College of Music in Russia, and the Connecticu­t Conservato­ry in New Milford.

She has a very busy teaching studio in New Fairfield and is on the faculty of the Kent School in Kent. Her students have been accepted at prestigiou­s music schools, including the Eastman School of Music in New York, Peabody Conservato­ry of Music, and Oberlin College. She has been an adjudicato­r for the MTNA Piano Competitio­n of New Jersey and for other state and local competitio­ns. She has recently been playing and will be recording works by Boston composer Nickolas Van Slyck.
